Workshop: Kaikaku

A Methodology for Lean Redesign of Product Development Systems

Time: Thursday, May 20   10:00-12:45
Facilitator: Frode Odegard

In this 1/2-day workshop we will show why process improvement by itself is not enough to achieve breakthrough results in product development.  We will present LSI’s multi-dimensional framework for mapping and redesigning product development systems in accordance with Lean principles and practices.  In addition to Value Stream Architecture, we will look at Social Architecture (culture and leadership), Product Architecture, Organization Architecture, and Information Architecture.  Because the framework is rich enough to deal with the real-world complexities of organizational performance bottlenecks, its use can yield fairly dramatic short-term results.  It also provides a good basis for continuous improvement once a product development system has been redesigned.

Objectives

Participants will learn about how to:

  • Map an existing product development system in five dimensions
  • Diagnose product development bottlenecks from multiple perspectives
  • Form and lead a cross-functional change team
  • Redesign a new product development system
  • Establish rituals to continue improving the new system
